Shincheonji A New Offshoot Christian Religious Movement

Shincheonji is a new religious movement primarily practiced in South Korea. The religion’s official name is “Shincheonji Church of Jesus.” It is also known as the Church of Jesus or the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony. The word “Shincheonji” is a combination of Korean terms meaning “New Heaven and New Earth”. The new offshoot Christian religious movement was created by Lee Man-hee in 1984.

According to the new religious movement doctrine, the world is currently living the times prophesied by the Book of Revelations in the Holy Bible. The offshoot new religious movement emphasis that the Revelation says Jesus will send is none other than Lee Man-hee, the leader and founder of the movement. The teachings continue to state that the way to salvation lies in the true faith within its members. Everyone who is not a member of the group will be denied forgiveness and destroyed during the final judgment. Lee Man-hee is referred to as Chairman Lee, the promised pastor, the advocate, or the one who overcomes. Its followers believe that the Bible is written in metaphors that only Lee Man-hee alone can decipher and correctly interpret.

The new religious movement leader and founder Lee Man-hee established its first temple in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province. Gradually, in June 1990, the Zion Christian Mission Center was established in Seoul, South Korea. Membership began to grow, and as such, according to the geographic territories, the membership was divided into twelve tribes within South Korea. The offshoot new Christian religious movements headquarter was moved to Gwacheon, which is believed to have prophetic meaning.

Shincheonji became one of the fastest-growing religious sects in South Korea. Besides its birthplace, the offshoot new Christian religious movement is widely spread across the world. The Tabernacle temple of the testimony actively works in various cultural activities and engages in volunteer efforts. The church runs several social-action organizations. After leaving all other religious groups, Lee Man-hee found his religious team and launched its first temple in March 1984 at Anyang, Gyeonggi Province. As its membership grew, it created that the Zion Christian Mission Center in Seoul. What’s more, the membership within South Korea was divided into twelve tribes in line with the geographic territories. It is presently headquartered in Gwacheon, which includes a prophetic meaning according to this Shincheonji theology. The church in 2014 was reported to have over 120,000 members.
